The claim notices went out last week, and for many writers the number on the page did not match the number in their heads. Word had spread that the Anthropic settlement would pay roughly $3,000 for each book swept into the case, and scores of authors, reading their notices closely, are learning they will collect only a fraction of that. In most cases, the shortfall can still be corrected.

The case behind the payments is Bartz v. Anthropic, the copyright class action brought by writers who said the company used their books without permission to train its artificial intelligence. A US judge approved the $1.5 billion settlement in July, in what has been widely reported as the largest copyright recovery of its kind. The money is now moving, and the notices that reached authors in early September are the first time many of them have seen how their individual share was calculated.
