An author whose book sits in the Princeton University Press catalog can now expect one particular thing to happen to it inside an AI system. A research tool can search the book, pull a passage and hand it back to a reader with a citation. What the license does not allow is the book being used to train a model. The Press has agreed an arrangement that keeps those two uses apart, and the Press, not the AI company at the other end, decides where the line falls.

## The License Covers Searching and Quoting, and Stops Before Training

Princeton University Press has partnered with Cashmere, a platform that connects publishers with AI companies, to make its catalog available to AI research tools under retrieval augmented generation licensing. An AI application can look a passage up and quote it, the way a research assistant pulls a citation off a library shelf, without that passage becoming part of the data a model is trained on. Cashmere describes its approach as no-LLM-training. The Press decides which parts of the catalog are licensed and on what terms, and existing book contracts and the copyrights underneath them stay intact. The catalog spans more than a century of publishing across the humanities, social sciences and natural sciences.
