### Book: Whale Harbor
By Mary Beth Keane

Eleven Joyce brothers from a remote corner of Connemara scatter across the world after their mother dies in 1963. Macdara, sixteen, takes on the weight of the family, and when his younger brother Rian runs away at thirteen and disappears, Macdara carries a broken promise through the decades that follow.

Good Morning America has chosen Whale Harbor by Mary Beth Keane as its book club pick for November 2026. Scribner published it in the US on 3rd November, and Orion publishes the UK hardback, titled Whale Harbour, on 5th November. It runs to 352 pages and suits a book club well: one family, several decades and a missing brother at its centre, with plenty for a group to disagree about.

## What Whale Harbor is about

The novel opens in 1963 in Cuan an Mhíl Mhóir, a small village on the Atlantic coast of Connemara in the west of Ireland. Mary and Cathal Joyce have just had their eleventh son, and a dead whale washes up on the beach. Soon afterwards the boys' mother dies.

Cathal, the local postman, is often absent and makes hasty decisions about his grieving sons. He takes a new wife, Nuala. The eldest, Sean, is already working in England, and 14-year-old Barry is sent to join him. Two more are sent to a seminary school, and the baby, Vincent, goes to live with a cousin. Macdara, the second eldest, is 16 and tries to hold the family together. When he is offered work on a cattle ranch in Montana, he breaks a promise to his rebellious younger brother Rian that he will not leave him behind, telling himself he will send for Rian later. Rian runs away at 13 and disappears.

That broken promise follows Mac through his life in America, and the novel moves across decades between Ireland, England, Montana and New York. It falls to a new generation of Joyces to confront the mystery of Rian's absence. Keane based the story loosely on her father's family, and in an author's note she makes clear that Cathal is not her grandfather and Macdara is not her father.

## Why it works for a book club

Whale Harbor gives a group several ways in. Readers with Irish family history will recognise the pattern of emigration it describes, with brothers sent to building sites in England and ranches in America. Readers who have read Keane's Ask Again, Yes will find the same interest in how one family event shapes decades of lives. And the eleven brothers give every member of a group someone to argue for.

Kirkus Reviews gave it a starred review, and Roddy Doyle has said he could not stop reading it. The Boston Globe called it a beautiful, sweeping novel.

## Ten questions for your book club

These questions avoid the ending, so a group can use them whether or not everyone has finished.

### The whale on the beach

The novel opens with a birth and a dead whale washing ashore on the same day. What did the whale come to mean to you as the story went on? Does the meaning change for different brothers?

### Cathal's choices

Cathal splits up his sons within months of their mother's death. Did you see his decisions as selfish, practical or both? Did your view of him change by the end?

### The promise Mac breaks

Mac tells Rian he will not leave him alone, and then leaves for Montana. Was he wrong to go? What would you have done at 16 with that offer?

### Brothers who stay and brothers who go

Some brothers emigrate and some stay in Connemara. How does the novel compare the lives of those who left with those who remained?

### Nuala

How did you feel about the boys' stepmother? Why do you think the younger boys cling to her while Rian rebels?

### A family of brothers

The Joyce children are all boys. How does that shape the way the Joyces deal with grief and with each other? Where do the women in the novel hold power?

### Ireland, England and America

Which setting felt most vivid to you: Connemara, England, Montana or New York? Did the novel change how you think about the Irish who emigrated in the 1960s?

### The family story behind the novel

Keane drew on her father's family but says the characters are not her relatives. Does knowing a novel is rooted in real family history change how you read it?

### The next generation

The search for Rian falls to a younger generation. Why do you think Keane gave them that task rather than Mac?

### What holds a family together

After decades apart, what still connects the Joyce brothers? Is the novel hopeful about families that have been scattered?

## If your group likes Whale Harbor

Keane's earlier novels make a natural next choice. Ask Again, Yes (2019), about two neighbouring families in New York, spent eight weeks on the New York Times bestseller list. The Walking People (2009) follows two sisters who leave a small Irish village for New York, and Fever (2013) tells the story of the woman known as Typhoid Mary.
