Angel Down

by Daniel Kraus

Winner of the 2026 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction. Near the end of the First World War, Private Cyril Bagger and four other soldiers are sent into No Man's Land to put a wounded comrade out of his misery. Instead they find a fallen angel tangled in barbed wire, who might help end the war if the men can set aside their own desires. Told in a single sentence that blends allegory, magical realism and science fiction.
